I really like my Nokia E71. And I am not the only one saying it. It has many fans around the world, so it is not surprising that it has more than 300 positive reviews on Amazon. It also comes with a nice price tag. The only problem I had was that I spent a lot of time searching for useful applications for this phone. This post is the result of my findings: 40 great applications that cover my needs(and hopefully yours) in many different areas.
The E71 is powered by Symbian OS, specifically S60 3rd edition. This version of the Symbian OS is currently the oldest one that can run most of the software that is out there, including applications developed with the new Nokia Qt SDK. This means that if you have a phone with a newer version of the Symbian OS (S60 5th edition or Symbian^3), you should be able to run all the applications that I am going to list here as well.
OK, here I present you 40 great apps for the Nokia E71:
- Y-Browser
This is a file browser for your phone. The nice thing is that it shows you hidden directories and files, so it is better to use this one instead of the built in browser. - JoikuSpot Light
Share your phone’s internet connection via WiFi. Connect multiple devices (laptops, other WiFi enabled phones, etc) to your phone and browse the internet everywhere. - SportsTracker
If you do any type of outdoor exercises like jogging, walking, cycling, etc, download this app. It logs your position using GPS, and then uploads your exercises to an online server that shows your average speed, distance covered, map of the region, etc. It also can be connected to social networking sites such as facebook to encourage your work outs. Highly recommended. - Nokia Maps
The nice thing about Nokia Maps is that the maps data can be downloaded to the phone’s memory and then you can use it without any connection to the internet. Ideal when travelling abroad and you don’t have a local sim card or when you don’t want to pay for data plans. Also, it comes with turn by turn voice directions in many languages. And all of this for free, for ever. - Google Maps
Some times you may need extra information that is not available on Nokia Maps. On these rare occasions it is always handy to have the Googls Maps application installed. The good thing is that you can use the places that you saved on Nokia Maps (Favorites) in Google Maps (Starred Items). Note that this app does not come with turn by turn voice directions and it uses internet to get the maps. - Metro
This application tells you the shortest route from one station to another in your local metro (subway), as well as the one with fewest connections. It uses offline data, so no internet access is necessary. Cities from all over the world are supported. Highly recommended. - cCalcPro
This is a powerful yet easy to use scientific calculator. It contains many functions such as simple mathematical ones, as well as trigonometric, financial and base functions. You could actually just use this calculator for every calculation you make, even for the simple ones since it is so easy to use, every key in the keyboard is mapped to a specific function, so it is like using a real calculator. - MobiReader
This app turns your phone into a nice e-book reader. For managing your e-books, and changing them to the format that this app understands, you can use Calibre, a great software for managing e-books on the PC. - Photo Browser
This app displays your photos in a nice grid gallery with an easy to use interface. It looks and works better than the built in photo viewer. - Snapper
If you want to make time-lapse movies, this is the app you should get. It allows you to take a picture every second, minute, hour, or any time interval that you need, up to one picture a day. It is simple to use and it works great. All the images are stored in a single folder. You can transfer that folder to the PC and then just drag and drop the first image into Avidemux and with a couple of clicks you can create a video out of them. - ScreenSnap
This is for taking screen-shots in your phone. It does the same thing as the Print Screen button on a PC. - SmartCam

This application uses the position of the sun and moon to indicate you where the north is. You only need to put the phone facing up, aligned with the shown diagram and you will know where the north is. Also, it gives you extra information such as sunrise, sunset and moon phase. - Sideralis
If you like to watch the stars, this app is for you. Once you configure it for your location, it will show you the stars that are in your view. You can freely navigate the 3D display of the stars to match the part of the sky you are looking at. Information about the stars is available as well as some astronomic terms explained. - RemoteWitch
Control your PC with your phone. Specially useful for presentations or media playback. - PyS60
This is the Python port to the S60 phones. Install it to add the ability to run python scripts on your phone. You need to install both, first PythonForS60_1_4_5_3rdEd.sis and then PythonScriptShell_1_4_5_3rdEd.SIS. Note that there is a newer version of PyS60 here that features Python 2.5, but some applications need the older version installed. Well, you can actually have both versions installed without problems. - Ped
This is a Python IDE as well as a general text editor. You need to install PyS60 first in order to install it. Also, you need to install it on the same place that you installed PyS60 (phone memory). It has many features, in particular auto completion. You can access the auto completion feature by holding the green button (call) and then pressing the enter button (center of d-pad). This app is also great for text editing in general. - JBakTaskMan
This is an advanced task manager. It has many nice features, such as launching applications by typing their name, among many others. A must have app for the power user. - FreeTimeBox
This is an awesome and simple application. It simply displays the current time at the menu bar, always. Now you will never need to go to the Home screen just for knowing the time when you are in the middle of something. You can configure it to disappear when certain applications are running (games for example), as well as the appearance and position. This app is a must. - vHome 4.2
If you want to change how the Home screen looks, you can install this app. It is a task manager that allows you to change the Home screen with many features. For example, if you need more than the normal 6 apps shortcuts, you can add up to 14 with this app. You can also add weather information or RSS feeds to your home screen. Recommended for the power user. - GPFCe
Nintendo emulator. This emulator supports sound. Re play your old NES games while you wait for the bus, or anywhere!. - AntSnes
Super Nintendo emulator. It does not support sound though, but the idea of having the ability to play your old Super NES games in your phone is awesome. - DOSBox
DOS emulator. This is the port of the DOSBox project to the S60 platform. With this, you can run DOS on your phone, so you can use all your old DOS programs in your phone. You can even run big applications such as Windows 98. - Pamp
Personal Apache MySQL PHP. Really. You can have a whole web-server on your phone, with databases, and dynamic pages. You could be hosting a whole CMS or a forum from your pocket. You could for example show a live feed from the camera without needing any external services. The possibilities are endless. - SICFTP
This is an FTP client. Transfer files back and forth from any server. - Putty
Good ol’ Putty. Telnet and SSH client on your phone. Thanks to this you could be working on the bus ride to/from work. - CpuMon
This application displays the usage of CPU and Memory. Good for measuring performance of applications on real devices. - Energy Profiler
Nokia released this nice application which shows the energy consumed by the device. This can be useful to developers and normal users. Developers can use this app for measuring the energy used by their applications to try to minimize it. Normal users can see the effects of applications and usage of the phone for extending battery life. - Device Status
This app, developed by Nokia, shows you detailed information about the phone, such as the model, IMEI number, software version, memory available, installed applications, and network information, among other things. - CellTrack
This application shows you information about the cell that you are connected to, such as the cell id and signal strength, among others. - FreeUnRar
This application allows you to open rar files.

Very extensive list although I am not impressed with the ability to retrieve info/programs after they have been del as I have with some other phones. My sis did something about a week after I got my phone ann now I can no longer access ovi or backup contacts. Other than that the phone does great . Joiku is an excellent program that I use since I don’t have the capability to just download anything, I have tried very few programs. Thanks again, eventually this list may come in handy.

Sure, and you don’t need any extra software for doing it, the E71 comes with a flash player app. Just open the file manager app and navigate to your flv file. Open it and you will see the movie.

Not sure if I understood your question correctly, but here is my best shot.
The E71 comes with two applications for radio, under the media menu.
One of those application is called Radio, which allows you to receive radio signals using your headphones as an antenna. Instead of using your earphones, you can also connect a regular cable to connect your E71 to any set of speakers. It will use the cable as an antenna and the tuned radio will sound through your speakers. You cannot use the built in speaker of the phone while using this application since it uses the earphone cable as the antenna, and when anything is connected as an earphone, the built in speaker of the phone is muted.
The other application is called Internet Radio, which allows you to connect to Internet streaming radios worldwide. With this application you don’t need to connect any cable so you can use your built in speaker, but you need Internet access. You can also connect your E71 to a set of speakers and it will sound through them.
I haven’t seen any good application for this…

Make sure that your phone really is compatible with Skype. I can assure you that the E71 is compatible.
Go here and click on View Compatible Phones to make sure your phone is compatible. If it is, just follow the instructions and install it.

Hi. I just installed Joikusoft Premium on my phone but it will not work…. it allowed me to accept the terms and conditions but when I tried to start it after that it says “unable to start…” The user manual is not much help. Any ideas?

Thanks. But I went to that help page and it says to use connection manager to check for anything else using the WLAN. Connection manager says “no active connections” …. so where does that leave me? Back at square one?
My guess would be to close (or even uninstall) apps that reserve the wifi. Reserving wifi is different to using it, so even if you see no activity in the connection manager, there may be some applications that have wifi reserved for them.
Some of the more common apps that present this behaviour are Whatsapp, Fring, Boingo, and Antivirus programs, as stated in the help page of joikuspot.
If that does not solve your problem, please contact joiku support for more information.

I would recommend you to download and install the latest Nokia Suite from here:

Also, make sure that you are using a USB cable to connect your phone, not Bluetooth. Once you establish the connection with your phone via USB cable you can then use it via Bluetooth.

how about movie player?
You don’t need any extra software for watching a movie, the E71 comes with a movie player app.
Just open the file manager app and navigate to your movie file. Open it and it will start playing.
Just got this phone and love it, however I am “computer illiterate”. I downloaded three games from the ovi store which showed up initially under applications. Now I can’t find them as they appear to have disappeared. Please help. Also what’s the best wa to download from the ovi store? USB cable, bluetooth or text message?
If all of them disappeared, I would guess that they are written in Java ME.
Sometimes all the icons of the Jar apps just vanish from the phone.
The solution is to run an app called MIDlet Restorer.
You can get it from here:

Just install and run it. Your games should appear after that.
The best way to download from the ovi store is basically what works best for you. I prefer downloading the app to the PC and then install it using bluetooth, but that’s just me.

I am having problems locating the app “S60SpotOn” on the Nokia Ovi Store, it says it does not exist. I checked for spelling error’s and all that but to no avail. Is there any other alternate app which can make the flash on my E71 work as a torch light?

S60SpotOn is the best torch app that I have found.
The last version released was 0.0.7 around 2007.
It is not available in the ovi store (the store did not exist in 2007), and it seems that the original page is no longer hosting it, so you need to download it from other hosting places.
You can search for “S60SpotOn v0.07” to get the latest version.
To install it, just make sure that you go to the Application Manager, select Options-> Settings and set Software installation to All and Online certificate check to Off. Also, since this package was signed years ago, it will be expired. Just change the date of your phone to a previous year until it works, maybe around 2007. Once it is installed, you can change your date back to the present.

I think that you are referring to the PIN or PUK codes of your SIM card.
If that is the case, you need to contact whoever sold you the SIM card.
Try converting the video on a PC to another format.

WOW AMAZING!! Anway i have a problem with java apps. I can’t use, install, or uninstall Java apps anymore and when i run the setup, the status bar for the installation stops near the end but never completes. I downloaded Midlet restorer to see if it worked but it didn’t. I have a few other java apps that i installed before this problem occurred and now i can’t open or uninstall them and their icons are still taking up space in my menu page.

Hi, now i have fixed my java by reinstalling the firmware, but i just noticed my software is old and actually it is 100.07.76 according to my antivirus(netquin). I know it hasn’t been updated in at least 2 years(i got it used) and i just updated my nokia suite but it says i have the latest software and i don’t have the SW update software on my phone. Any ideas on how to fix this?
mmm, the official way of updating your phone will be to just wait until it becomes available to your region/model/etc…
Some locked phones depend on the provider to get the updates, as you can see here:

But, if you are able to reinstall the firmware, an update is nothing more than that.
You would just need to reinstall the latest firmware (510.21.009), not the 100.07.76 that you installed.
Make sure that you know what you are doing because you can make your phone useless, void the warranty (if any), or end up with other language, or mapping of the keys.

Do you recommend installing apps on E71’s phone memory or the memory card?
From what I remember, there are a couple of apps that need to be installed in the phone memory, and also some apps write into the phone memory, no matter where they were installed.
Because of those reasons I normally use the memory card as default for installing all the applications, so that I will have enough space for these other apps.

Change your phone’s date to one year ago and try to install it. Repeat this process (going back 1 year at a time) until it installs, sometimes you may have to go a few years back.

As I said in this post, you can read ebooks on your E71 by installing MobiReader in your phone. You can install Calibre on your PC to convert ebooks into the mobi format so that you can read them in MobiReader in your E71.

Sorry for the longtime to reply but i have successfully updated my phones firmware. One note i should make is that you need a valid sim card to update, since i was on vacation and tried to update. Also you should not try using bluetooth to update, that was actually the reason i couldn’t update. I luv the update except for the start-up takes at least 4minutes and before that time it is too slow to try and do anything. I was thinking that maybe i should reinstall the firmware to see if that fixes the start-up issue, what are your suggestions? One more note, while i was in vacation in america and tried to update while my sim card was invalid there the size of the update was about 110mb while in my current residence, ethiopia, the size of the update was about 49mb. Just a note to consider, and this was all within the past two months with nokia software updater you suggested. Thnx
The slow boot may be because of your installed applications.
Try uninstalling all of them and only install the ones you really use.
Reinstalling the firmware may help solving the slow boot, or not :) Still, I think it is worth the try.
Firmware updates must be done via the USB cable since they are really low level operations.
Either way, I think the best is to just keep your phone up, and restart it only when something is wrong.

After you connect the phone you may try to manually open the Nokia Suite software.
I have downloaded skype to my E71, but when I try to login to skype, it fails, continually re-routing me back to the login screen. I’ve tried rebooting after installing skype and removing & reinstalling skype with no success. Any suggestions?

I did download from the Nokia store. After reading the small print on one of the Skype support pages, it appears that Skype no longer supports video calls for Symbian phones. It should still support non-video calls, and should allow me to login, but I’m not holding my breath. I just wish the Nokia store would, in a timely manner, remove apps that are no longer supported.

Or is their any way to convert ‘sis to sisx’?
A sisx file is a signed sis file, so you can convert a sis file into a sisx by signing the sis file with a developer certificate.
That process can be complicated, so the easiest solution is to just get the signed file from the original developer, or just download the file through Nokia Store.
Also, you can always try to just rename it to sisx in case it is already signed.

Well bidoson, there are a couple of guides out there that you can get to by using google, but Win98 on the E71 via dosbox is really slow, so I don’t think it is really worth it.

You should take your phone to the Nokia shop and ask them to repair it.
Basically you will need to reflash your phone, which is for advanced users.
For those who are interested I recently I upgraded my E71 to the latest firmware and noticed that the battery didn’t last as long, I did some research online and found this is a common problem with the latest firmware so I decided to downgrade to version 500.21.009. Most people say this isn’t possibe and will break the phone but I got it working with JAF. I downloaded the firmware using navifirm and then flashed the phone with JAF. The first flash failed and the phone wouldn’t fully boot so I flashed it again this time using the ini option in JAF and it worked.

hello house, its been a month i have been looking for another software for my E71 camera flash light, although am currently using S60SpotOn and Nicelight software as phone touch light but both are low as indicator light, too dull… Plz is there anyone in the house that can prescribe the brighter ones……thanks
ibrash, S60SpotOn allows you to turn on the lcd screen, as well as the led from the camera. If you turn them both on, you will have the brightest light that the e71 can emit. No other software will be better than that, since the hardware is at its maximum.
Using Joiku Premium and trying to get my Lenovo A1 tablet to access it for internet access. Supposedly my Tablet is an andorid and hence does not connect to Ad Hoc Networks. Is there a workaround for this?

I do not know of any application that allows you to do that SAIKUMAR. Even if you had one, it is probably illegal to do that, so I do not recommend you doing it anyway.

Kheir, I think that the app manager only allows you to uninstall the installed software, it does not allow you to update the software as far as I am concerned.
Hani, I do not know what you mean by texlater software. It kinda sounds like Latex, so if that’s the case, I do not know of any tex compiler, but you can just use any text editor, like the one I show on this post to edit your tex files.

You can try the following:
– Install and use the latest Nokia Suite
– Install and use the older Nokia PC Suite
– Use the USB cable instead of Bluetooth (at least the first time you need to connect the phone with the cable)
– Try connecting the phone to a different USB port.
– Make sure that on the phone you select Nokia PC suite or a similar option when connecting.
– Try with Bluetooth if everything else fails.
– What phone do you have?, remember that for newer models, like the Lumias, you need to use Zune instead.

I haven’t heard about ttpod. I searched for it and found that it is only available for S60v5/S^3, but not for S60v3 which is what the E71 is running (i.e. the E71 is not a touch phone).

Just to make sure, do you select PC SUITE on your phone? You need to select it.
If the phone is not recognized on your laptop, maybe there is a problem with your USB controller. Try updating the drivers for the USB controller on your laptop.
Have you tried with both, the Nokia PC Suite (older), and with the newer Nokia Suite?, they are two different programs. Maybe it will work with one and not with the other. Also, try reinstalling the software as well.

No, actually only a few of them are available in the ovi store (now called Nokia Store), because at the moment of publication the store did not even exist. Some of the most current and popular ones are indeed available from the store, like Skype for example. This is actually the main point of this post, to let you know about cool apps that are not available easily.
About the expired certificate, you just need to change your phone’s date to a couple of years before.
Take a look at my previous comments on this post, since I answered exactly the same question before. My answer starts with “S60SpotOn is the best torch app that I have found”.
As I said before, S60SpotOn is the best torch app that I have found for the E71, but you can always search the store and try a few others for yourself.
Hello. I want to play .avi files. Previously I was using divx player app for that. But with the new year it has been showing ‘expired certificate’ and a suggestion to go to mobile.divx.com. I have went to mobile.divx.com but nothing came in hand as neither the recent version divx 1.0 nor infamous divx 0.95 was running. Both of them showed expired ceritificate. For that, I have temporarily fixed it by changing time back to 2012 whenever I use divx player. But then if I use internet with it then it shows again and again to seek permission for sending a certificate because the time is not correct. I have tried another apps like coreplayer, smartmovie and powermovie players. Coreplayer is a mess. Smartmovie is paid and I tried every available method on the internet of hacking it. Powermovie is good and easily hacked but not upto like divx player. Please can you let me know how can I fix divx player’s expired certificate for nokia e71 without changing time again and again? Divx is an important app for me because I watch movies on it. Or I would not mind using smartmovie player if I can use it without paying.
Between, thanks for answering all those questions of other people from many years. It is really an appreciable job you have been doing. A job which Nokia should have done.
Also, can you update your list with new links to download those files. It is getting hard to google them and downloading them from different sources as most of them is saying ‘certificate error’.

I do not know a solution for the problem that you state. Changing your date to 2012 works?, if that is the case, then there is your solution, change the date when you use the app, and when you are finished, change the date again.
From what you say, I think there are two options: You can continue using the free apps with the annoyances that they have, or you could pay for using software that works better for you. I do not see the problem of paying for the time of someone else when it saves your time.

Hello All, I’ve just installed Skype on my Nokia E71 downloading it onto my phone from the Ovi Store. It took a very long time to download and install. Unfortunately when I enter my username and password it just keeps connecting but a connection is never established. Does anyone else have the same problem and how did you fix it???

I have never had that issue, but I recommend you to check your username and password in a regular PC first.
After you check that, try connecting in your phone using a WiFi connection. VOIP services like Skype use a lot of data, so if you have a slow connection like EDGE or GPRS, you may not be able to connect. Always use WiFi, or at worst 3G connectivity. Anything slower will not work very well.
Hi samontab, thank you for your prompt and descriptive reply! When I enter my username and password on my PC Skype starts up and works fine. However when I do the same on my E71 it just does not establish a connection. When it is trying to connect I get an E double arrow symbol on the top left in the display on the phone. The user guide description of this is
the EGPRS packet data connection is active. I guess that this means that the connection is too slow and I will need to find a location that offers a WiFi connection or a location where a 3G signal is available.(Where I live I get a GSM signal) >> Bugger

If you are going to be using Skype from your home, I recommend you to buy a cheap wireless router so that you can have WiFi at home.
I have been searching for hrs to find if google voice can be used with the E71 to place calls. I can txt and use voice mail, but not place calls. My doid has and app for it. But I still like using the E71 the majority of the time Best reception of any phone I have owned. And i would like to place calls that show my google voice number. Thanks for the list of apps

If you are using a 3rd part app, that may be the problem. Use the included camera app.
If the problem is with the included camera app, then maybe there is a hardware problem with the camera, or with the firmware. Take it to a local Nokia Support store, or if you want to void the warranty, and try to solve it yourself, try reinstalling the firmware, or try a newer firmware.
Note that updating the firmware is for advanced users and you can turn your phone into a useless piece of hardware, and you will void the warranty. So, you should contact Nokia Care.

I do not know of any software for the E71 for doing that. But I guess it would be uncomfortable to DJ with the E71… I suggest you just use a laptop, PC, ipad, or at least a touch phone for that.
hi, I would really appreciate your kind assistance on problems I have been having with syncing my emails on my nokia E71.
Sometimes the emails appears to be in sync (or once I get it to sync by switching off the phone or changing internet connection) a couple mins later the inbox on my phone is empty, i.e., it is blank! Somehow all folders are updated except the inbox folder.
Sometime ago I deleted all accounts on https://email.nokia.com and and added them again on my phone, and reset the data but it only worked for a short time.
I even tried reinstalling the original (latest) update 501.21.001 (and also other backups) and nothing worked. (I know the most recent update is 510.21.009 but the software is saying the first one is the latest available)
Looking at the connection info and viewing the log I see “Error Memory allocation failed (Error code: -4).). Error occurred in EaPlugin while creating request

3D games on an old cellphone is not a good combination. Many of them will not run in the E71, but maybe there are a few that will.
Regarding the game brother, I have never heard of it, so I do not know if python not being installed is the problem. I suggest you to install python and that way you will know for sure if that was the problem.

Jammy.. To hard format ur nokia E71,step1. switch off ur phone. after switching off, press the keys (alt * 3 green key powerbutton) at thesame time.
Hold unto all those keys until after the nokia hands have joined.
This will format your nokia E71. If it doesn’t work the first time, retry it carefully again and make sure all those keys are pressed down together at d same time.

I haven’t checked for a long time about firmware updates for the E71. In any case, since you are a Symbian Wizard and have an already hacked phone, you should be able to flash the firmware version that you find. Remember that you void the warranty, and you are on your own. Happy hacking.

Try changing the date of your device before installing. The certificate was valid at some point, so if you go back, year by year, it should work eventually.

Change the date of your phone to one year in the past and try again. Repeat this process until it installs correctly. You may need to try many times before it works because some applications certificates are really old.

It is because the certificate is expired, as it says.
Change the date on your device a few years back until it works. Try going back one year at a time. It will eventually work. After you install it, you can change the date back again.

For some reasons, my phone contact option is turned to Online Contact. When I ever I open Contacts, it takes me to an option that says GO ONLINE. I can’t get to the contacts saved in my phone. I have reset my phone several times but it is just not coming back.
Please advise as how to bring back the normal option of contacts in my Nokia E71-1
Hey Samontap, I think you are the expert of nokia e71, well I use nokia e71 from 2 years ago, I had use androids, iphone, but nokia e71 is the world’s best phone ever I have, now I have so many features in it like:
1.Start menu, as of windows.
2.ScreenSnap.
3.Paint – 2 programs.
4.Cartoon make.
5.Torch. Etc…
And as I’m a hacker too
So I have some cool apps like:

plz guide me how 2 install dosbox on nokia e71 , i’ve installed all the files called dosbox dependencies and also the dosbox.sis but its not wrking..
A grey coloured screen is displaying for almst 2 sec. And then the app closes..
when i searched on web,”how 2 install dosbox” then there i read to copy tc folder, premapper.txt,mapper.txt , dosbox.conf to E:/data/
But there is no such folder namely tc..
I ve copied the other 3 .txt files to E:/data/
Then there were instructions to remove the code in the end of dosbox.conf and type the following code:
s60map E:/data/premapper.txt
mount c E:\data\
c:
c:\tc\install.exe
I’ve done all of these things bt still it is’nt working..
