For processing it in real time to be able to survive, humans (and other animals) have developed an attention system that allows them to filter out non important portions of the scene by just focusing on the most salient parts of what is being observed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samontab.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/lena2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-48 alignleft\" title=\"lena2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.samontab.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/lena2-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"lena being processed with  the fine grained saliency features\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.samontab.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/lena2-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.samontab.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/lena2.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I wrote a paper about using saliency as a new feature for object detection obtaining good results. It was accepted for publication in the Image and Vision Computing (<a title=\"IMAVIS journal\" href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.imavis.2009.06.006\">IMAVIS<\/a>) journal. You can download the manuscript from <a title=\"saliency manuscript IMAVIS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samontab.com\/web\/files\/Montabone_IMAVIS_Manuscript.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. For calculating the new proposed features, I wrote a fine-grained saliency library.&nbsp; It requires OpenCV to run properly. You can download it from <a title=\"saliency library\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samontab.com\/web\/files\/saliencylib.zip\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. You can also download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samontab.com\/web\/files\/saliencyCode.zip\">source code<\/a> which is released under a <em>BSD<\/em> license.<\/p>\n<p>I updated the code to be used with the modern C++ OpenCV interface and CMake.
